Workplace of the future: Google Bay View – using emergent technologies to enable innovative and sustainable design
This presentation will focus on Heatherwick Studio’s approach to the design and construction of Google Bay View HQ in California, the largest LEED v4 BD+C: NC Platinum certified project in the world.
At Bay View, the canopy roofs are draped with 50,000 photovoltaic 'dragon scale' panels that generate enough power to meet roughly 40% of the energy demands of the campus. The distinctive shape of the roof also allows for the collection of rainwater, which is then recycled throughout the site, while retention ponds capture roughly seven million gallons of storm water.
The campus features 7.3 acres of high value natural open space, including meadows, marsh and woodland, and the largest geothermal system in North America. Healthy materials feature throughout the interior for everything from carpet tiles to paint, and the ventilation system uses 100% fresh outside air.
Kyriakos Chatziparaskevas and Pablo Zamorano will talk through the detail of the design and how the studio, together with BIG, used emergent technologies to bring the design to life.

Pablo Zamorano, Head of Geometry and Computational Design - Since joining Heatherwick Studio in 2015 Pablo has been instrumental on Projects as well as leading the Geometry and Computational Design group.
As Head of Geometry and Computational Design at the studio, Pablo leads a team of specialists that works across all studio projects as well as providing expertise and guidance on new technologies, techniques, and the execution of challenging geometries. Pablo is currently leading across a number of Applied Research projects and has previously been Deputy Project Leader on Coal Drops Yard, an award-winning retail quarter and public space in King’s Cross, London. He oversaw all packages on the scheme and coordinated their delivery between the studio and the executive architect during Stage 3 and Planning. From Stage 4 onwards, he focused on assisting the team to take the design through contract and later into construction. He was key to the development and fabrication coordination for all complex geometry related areas on the project, most notably the Upper Level.
Kyriakos Chatziparaskevas, Associate Project Leader - Since joining Heatherwick Studio in 2014, Kyriakos’ contribution has spanned across the design and delivery stages of the studio’s projects.
Kyriakos has been instrumental in the design of Google’s Bay View Headquarters, a 1.1M sq.ft combined office and event space development in Mountain View, CA. Working on the project since 2015, he has been tasked with the concept and R&D of the large span canopy and envelope system, through Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documentation and Construction Administration.
