V&A Dundee: A design story
Arup
Toby Clark has a long history developing façade designs on a wide variety of complex building topologies. He is known for his unique skills in solving complex 3D geometrical problems in collaboration with the architectural and engineering design teams. As a former member of Arup’s Advanced Geometry Unit (AGU), he is got used to working on complex geometrical projects with many leading international Architectural practices. He currently performs as a specialist designer and project leader within the Arup UK Facades team.
Building Description
The V&A Dundee building is a geometrically complex three storey structure with an upper level of open gallery spaces cantilevering off two lower levels of workshop and office spaces. The double curved concrete façade is clad with a series of unique precast concrete fins. Toby worked closely with the architectural team in Tokyo and London to produce a design that met the requirements of client brief and the original competition aesthetic.
