On the Way to Convergence
Herzog & de Meuron
Herzog & de Meuron
While hand drawings, physical models and mock-ups play an important role in Herzog & de Meuron’s design process, all projects are underpinned by the multidisciplinary Design Technologies team. We choose the best tools for each specific task, which allows our design process to simultaneously occupy both the analogue and the digital.
Convergence of tools, cross-functional team and curiosity for experimentation are approaches for an Integrated Design Experience. Vasilis and Michael will tell stories about Animation, Digital Fabrication and why it may all be interconnected.
Michael Drobnik, Associate, Lead Design Technologies, joined Herzog & de Meuron as BIM Manager in 2014 and was appointed an Associate in 2020. Michael leads the multidisciplinary and global Design Technologies (DT) Team, that supports architectural projects with digital methods and tools ranging from BIM, Computational Design, Visuals and Animations to the Analogue/Digital Workshop. Over the years Michael and his team have brought research initiatives like XR, custom Early Design Tools or Sustainability and Performance Simulations into daily practice.
Michael received his architecture degree in 2007 from the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the TH Karlsruhe, Germany, having already gained practical experience in Amsterdam, New York, and Munich. From 2011 – 2014, Michael taught at the Chair for Architectural Informatics at the TU Munich in the field of Computational Design. Michael worked as a commission member and lecturer for the CAS ARC Digital at the ETH Zürich and has published articles for ARCH+, TEC21 and in the publication “The BIM Manager”.
Vasilis Kalisperakis began his journey at Herzog & de Meuron in the Design Technologies (DT) team in 2013, following the completion of his architecture degree from UTH (University of Thessaly) in Greece. He has since been dedicated to exploring the intersection of the digital and physical worlds in architectural visualization, films, animations, gaming and XR applications. Vasilis is adept at employing various innovative techniques and aesthetics, with a focus on real-time rendering, AI image manipulation, motion capture 3D animation, frame-to-frame animation, VR painting, and game engine workflows.
