Speckle: Object Based Collaboration with Grasshopper

This workshop introduces the concept of object based modelling & collaboration in Grasshopper, powered by Speckle and Rhino 8.

Ideal for architects, engineers, and computational designers, it explores how to create data-rich objects, enable real-time collaborative workflows, and build interactive dashboards.

Using Speckle, we will explore how to create a multiplayer Grasshopper definition, allowing different disciplines to work in parallel and in real time. Additionally, we will leverage Grasshopper as a data generator, Speckle for data management and storage, and Power BI for visualization and communication.

Participants will:

    • Learn how Grasshopper can be transformed into a team tool for synchronisation and co-creation
    • Create data rich geometry using Speckle objects, extend it with custom properties
    • Create Power-BI interactive dashboards with data coming from Rhino/Grasshopper
    • How to access and communicate the data using Speckle API

Learning Objectives:

Equip attendees with collaborative parametric workflow skills and empower them to enhance project outcomes through data-rich modelling.

Expected Outcomes:

Attendees will gain confidence in synchronising models, creating and communicating data rich geometries, and applying cross-platform workflows effectively. They will be able to create their own Power-BI dashboards and interact with the data.

Requirements:

Attendees
must have the following software knowledge to attend the workshop:

  • Attendees must have intermediate Rhino and Grasshopper knowledge.
  • Familiarity with parametric workflows is recommended.
  • Basic Speckle knowledge is advisory but not essential.

Attendees should bring their own laptop (Windows or Mac OS X) with the following software installed:

  • Rhino 8 (full version, pre-installed)
  • Speckle Manager (latest version, pre-installed)
  • Speckle for Grasshopper (installed by Manager)
  • Web browser (for Speckle account access)
  • Visual Studio Code (with Python installed)
  • Ideally participants should create a Speckle account at app.speckle.systems ahead of the workshop
  • Power-BI (Free version is good)

NB* This workshop is suitable for both Windows and Mac OS X users.
