Introduction to Parametric Garment Design

This workshop will introduce the basics of parametric garment design and how it can be applied to garment creation using Grasshopper. Participants will learn how to use parametric principles to design dynamic, customizable garments, exploring the intersection of fashion and computational design.

This workshop is aimed at fashion designers, textile designers, &  fashion students with an interest in integrating digital tools and parametric design into their garment design processes. Beginners in parametric design with limited experience in Grasshopper or Rhino 3D.

Learning Objectives:

The session will cover the foundational concepts of parametric design, demonstrate how to use Grasshopper for parametric pattern drafting and layouts for digital fabrication. By the end of the workshop, participants should have a solid understanding of how parametric tools can be integrated into fashion design workflows, empowering them to explore innovative, personalized, and scalable garment designs.

Expected Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand principles of parametric garment design and how they apply to fashion and garment construction.
  2. Navigate the Grasshopper interface to create a basic parametric garment.
  3. Learn how to customise garment designs based on input parameters (such as size, shape, and fit).
  4. Generate a 2D digital model of the garment pattern layout, which can be further developed or prototyped and ready for digital fabrication.
  5. Review various advanced processes of parametric garment design including 3D modelling, body scan to bespoke design and multi-objective optimisation for garments.

Requirements:


Attendees must have Beginner Rhino knowledge:

  • This can be existing knowledge of the software or knowledge gained by attending the Intro to Rhino sessions offered by Simply Rhino, prior to Shape to Fabrication.

Attendees must bring their own laptop (Windows or Mac OS X) with the following software installed:

  • Rhino 8 and Grasshopper

NB* This workshop is suitable for both Windows and Mac OS X users.

Elizabeth Bigger – GenCloth
Elizabeth is a computational garment practitioner and the founder of GenCloth, exploring parametric and generative garment design. Elizabeth specialises in creating bespoke garment systems for the integration of data and waste reduction. She began her career as a traditional tailor crafting bespoke garments for fifteen years before including computational programming, parametric design, and electronic hardware into her practice. Elizabeth is also an avid runner, currently training for her 4th marathon.
