In this presentation we'll discover an innovative approach to garment patterning and fabrication, specifically for bespoke sportswear. Traditional garment patterning methods have remained largely unchanged for over a century, relying on two-dimensional (2D) drafting techniques that often fail to account for the full complexity of the human body. Many mathematical relationships between body shape and garment construction remain undefined, leading to limitations in fit, comfort, and performance.

The presentation will introduce a cutting-edge dimensional garment patterning methodology that moves beyond conventional 2D drafting. By integrating a 3D body scan into patterning techniques, a fully customized body pattern is generated using X, Y, and Z coordinates. This approach allows for a more precise representation of the wearer's anatomy, ensuring a better fit.

The development of a landmarking system for the 3D body, places measurement points across the body to guarantee accuracy in shaping and fitting. The talk will also explore the design and fabrication process of bespoke sportswear for the everyday athlete. Attendees will gain insight into the challenges of working with 3D body data, dimensional patterning techniques and functional sportswear design.

Additional discussions will cover the impact of climate considerations on sportswear materials and how advanced computational tools help refine patterning for fit & performance.

Elizabeth Bigger - Elizabeth is a computational garment practitioner and the founder of GenCloth, exploring parametric and generative garment design. Elizabeth specializes in creating bespoke garment systems for the integration of data and waste reduction. She began her career as a traditional tailor crafting bespoke garments for fifteen years before including computational programming, parametric design, and electronic hardware into her practice. Elizabeth is also an avid runner, currently training for her 4th marathon.
