Skatepark design – Form follows movement

Glifberg-Lykke

Designing a skatepark is like being a choreographer for a dance, where each shape in the park sets a rhythm, and the skater, like a jazz musician, improvises their speed and moves within that rhythm. It is multidisciplinary task that combines an understanding of geometry, youth culture, street culture, communication, and how people interact.

Using Rhino, we create precise 3D models of complex shapes and terrains, ensuring that every curve and ramp is optimized for skater movement while factoring in gravity and centrifugal force. We use Enscape, to make these models come to life in real-time, allowing us and the clients to experience and refine the flow of the skatepark, ensuring it feels intuitive and dynamic. Using Rhino and Enscape combined we enable a seamless integration of geometry, environment, and user experience, allowing the skatepark to fit naturally into its surroundings while supporting fluid, spontaneous movement.

Ebbe Lykke - Ebbe is trained as a Cabinetmaker, furniture designer and urban space designer from the Danish Design School. He holds a master’s degree in design from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, specializing in strategic design in public spaces.
Together with three-time world champion in skateboarding and two-time X Games gold medalist Rune Glifberg, he founded the architectural studio Glifberg-Lykke, which has designed some of Europe’s largest and most innovative skateparks. Ebbe has worked as the chief designer and project leader on all the studio’s projects for the past 18 years.
