The Sculptural Seating on the Strand presentation, from LDA Design and Millimetre, will showcase the transformation of Strand Aldwych from a congested 4 lane gyratory to London’s cultural and education district. LDA Design will present the overall masterplan for the project, highlight three distinct sculptural seats, which were designed by LDA Design and fabricated by Millimetre. LDA Design will present the design intent of the Sculptural Seats and how Rhinoceros was used during the design stages and the transfer of information from LDA Design to Millimetre.

Millimetre will present the complex fabrication process, including assessing the buildability of the LDA Design model, 3d scanning the site to get within a 10mm tolerance as part of the detailed design process and the fabrication itself. The team used a combination of traditional woodworking techniques alongside an in-house 7 axis Kuka robot and complex metalwork to fabricate the galvanised frames. The sculptural seats included:

  • 27.5m3 of Accoya
  • 595 cnc’d panels
  • 135 bespoke galvanised steel frames
  • 2872 separate parts
  • 10mm tolerance over 100m bench
  • 2017 days labour
