Finding Equilibrium: From Theoretical to Practical

Beyond digital tools and workflows, an equally important cultural shift must take place. Identifying alternative ways of carrying out calculations, structural checks, communication, and data coordination is just as crucial as developing new tools and solutions. In an industry with tighter margins and shorter programmes, embracing new technologies is essential to keeping projects creative, relevant, and sustainable. Katherine will share how she uses her workflows on designing unusual artworks and from her experience in computer science to tackle more standardised projects in a different way, and how she brings her counterparts along with her on this stimulating way of designing for the built environment.

Through the lens of an artwork suspended using carefully balanced prestressed rods, Katherine shows how advances in data interoperability, and ways in which different parties in a design team communicate, are key to unlocking challenging projects. Katherine is a strong advocate for transforming the way design takes place in AEC by being attentive to obvious pain points various disciplines face and by tackling them with adaptive approaches.

Katherine Chimenes - Katherine is a structural engineer at Price & Myers with a strong focus on technology in the built environment. As a leader of the in-house Computation Group, Katherine drives innovation through automation and digital optimisation, enabling more efficient and sustainable design solutions. Katherine’s diverse portfolio includes a wide range of projects ranging from public art programs and 24m tall collapsible parasols to the Evangelist spires of La Sagrada Familia and the Redevelopment of Euston Conventional Station with Grimshaw.
Being driven to promote computational skills in the AEC industry, Katherine has been a spokesperson across the industry advocating computational tools built for their users. Katherine initially studied Computing at Imperial College before switching to Engineering at UCL, and teaches at the Architectural Association and the Bartlett School of Architecture.
