Has the quality of your project ever suffered because you didn’t have the right information at the time you had to make a decision? Have you ever had an energy modeling consultant send you a report two weeks after you gave them design documents and all you can say is “great but the design is completely different now?” If so, you are not alone and you’re just experiencing an issue that persistently plagues today’s building industry.

In this presentation, Chris and Jeroen will examine the root causes of the “two-week turnaround” problem starting from the biggest reasons why energy modeling takes so long and moving down the list of challenges that make collaboration over building simulation difficult. They will show how workflows with the Pollination CAD plugins and cloud platform can mitigate these challenges and ultimately eliminate the two-week turnaround altogether. Lastly, they will demonstrate how the team at Thornton Tomasetti has applied these workflows to three of their active projects, enhancing collaboration between the different disciplines of their team.

Chris Mackey is a Co-founder of Ladybug Tools LLC and has been a lead developer of its software since the Ladybug Tools project started in 2013. Chris develops and maintains many of the project's core libraries, which form the backbone of the Pollination software product line as well as the free Ladybug Tools plugin for Grasshopper, which has been downloaded over half a million times.

Jeroen Janssen is an Associate Director and is leading the CORE studio team in London. CORE is Thornton Tomasetti’s Research and Development incubator, enabling collaboration with project teams and industry colleagues to drive change and innovation. Jeroen particularly focuses on the design of microclimates for urban spaces. During the early stages of a design, in-house developed digital models of wind simulations and solar and thermal radiation are used to analyze complex urban scenarios on master planning scale or at the level of an individual development, thus ensuring comfortable spaces from the outset of the architectural design process.
